1. What is methylation?
Methylation is a cellular process that can essentially turn on and off the expression of genes at the DNA level. It plays a role in detox, DNA production, neurotransmitter production, fat metabolism, liver health, and cellular energy.
2. What happens during Phase 1 liver detoxification?
Phase 1 is the liver's process of using enzymes, most notably the cytochrome P450 family, to oxidize toxic substances such as xenobiotics, steroid hormones, and pharmaceuticals. It scrubs clean and neutralizes the toxic material.
3. What is glutathione's role in detoxification?
Glutathione is the body's master detoxifying antioxidant. Low levels have been found in autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder. NAC is a precursor that helps your body produce more glutathione.
4. Which excretion pathway has been shown to remove the highest amounts of heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury?
Arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury are all shown to accumulate in higher amounts in sweat than in any other excretion pathway. This makes sweating through sauna or exercise one of the most effective, low-cost methods to detox metals.
5. Why are the hypothalamus and pineal gland especially vulnerable to environmental neurotoxins?
The hypothalamus and pineal glands are not protected by the blood-brain barrier, so when neurotoxic agents enter the body they easily make their way to these areas of the brain. Both glands play direct roles in behavior, mood, and mood disorders.
